My name is Jane Lee.  I am a journalist, writer, audio producer and presenter specialising in law, crime and politics. My work interrogates how state and institutional power interacts with culture and identity.

I bring more than a decade of experience breaking news, interviewing leaders, experts and everyday people, explaining law reform, legal decisions and policy in plain English, using audio to bring stories to life and collaborating in teams to produce multi-part narrative podcasts.

I was previously a legal affairs and court reporter for national Australian newspapers The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, where I covered law, policy and crime. I followed the story of how historic child abuse was covered up and enabled within churches and schools around Australia, and the introduction of reforms designed to prevent further abuse. I also covered several major public law battles in which individual citizens and asylum seekers sued state and federal governments over alleged abuse of their powers.

In 2016 I covered the Australian federal election as a member of the Canberra press gallery, where I focused on health and legal policy.

I reskilled as an audio journalist at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, where I reported on flagship current affairs programs AM, PM, and The World Today, produced and hosted interview podcasts and audio documentaries, including Section 71, a series about High Court cases that shaped Australian history.

In 2019 I won the Victorian Quill Award for long-form radio journalism with the Background Briefing Team for our investigation into the death of Chinese international student Jeremy Hu.

In 2021 I won the Eureka Prize for Science Journalism with fellow producers in the ABC Science Unit for Patient Zero, a podcast tracing the origins of historic disease outbreaks.

Most recently I was a co-host and senior producer for Guardian Australia’s daily news podcast Full Story, which was awarded best daily podcast at the Australian Podcast Awards in 2024. 

I hold a double-degree in Journalism and Law from the University of Technology, Sydney and speak English and conversational Cantonese.
